Cedar Pride Wreck Dive — Aqaba Moon Diving Center

Why the Cedar Pride is One of the Best Wreck Dives in the Red Sea

Aqaba Moon Diving Center — Updated November 16, 2025

When divers talk about Red Sea wrecks, famous names like the Thistlegorm or Dunraven often come to mind. But just off the coast of Aqaba lies a wreck many consider equally magical — the Cedar Pride. Carefully sunk as an artificial reef, the Cedar Pride is now one of the top wreck dives in the Red Sea, offering accessible swim-throughs, spectacular photo opportunities, and abundant marine life.

A short history: from cargo ship to living reef

The Cedar Pride was a 74-meter Lebanese freighter that suffered a major fire in 1982. In 1985 it was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef and to boost Aqaba’s marine environment. Today the wreck lies on its port side in roughly 10–27 meters of water, forming a stable, fish-filled habitat.

Why divers of all levels love the Cedar Pride

1. Perfect depth for many certifications

The Cedar Pride sits at a depth that makes it exciting without being extreme — suitable for divers with an Open Water certification and above. It’s ideal for guided fun dives, photography dives, and training such as the Wreck Diver specialty.

2. Abundant marine life

Over decades underwater, the wreck has become a thriving reef. Expect to see turtles, lionfish, clownfish, wrasse, anthias, and colorful soft corals. The biomass and coral growth make every dive feel alive — a real attraction for both marine enthusiasts and photographers.

3. Safe swim-throughs and roomy passages

The ship’s structure offers spacious swim-throughs and large cargo holds that are safe to explore with a guide. For divers practicing penetration skills or shooting dramatic wide-angle photos, the Cedar Pride has both accessible routes and more advanced areas for experienced teams.

4. Outstanding photography conditions

The wreck is one of the most photographed in Aqaba thanks to dramatic lines, coral-covered surfaces, and the way light filters through the hull. If you’re interested in underwater photography, plan for a wide-angle rig and a guide who knows the best angles.

What makes the Cedar Pride stand out in the Red Sea?

Unlike accidental wrecks, the Cedar Pride was intentionally sunk to create habitat — and it has succeeded famously. Its stable position, safe layout, year-round favorable conditions, and easy access from shore or boat set it apart from many deeper or more exposed wrecks.
