Aqaba Artificial Reefs: Tank, Hercules C130, Tristar & More (Full Guide)

Aqaba is famous for its thriving coral reefs and warm, crystal-clear Red Sea waters — but what makes the Gulf of Aqaba truly unique is its extraordinary collection of artificial reefs and purpose-sunk wrecks. This guide covers the Tank, Hercules C-130, Tristar, C-130, and the broader Underwater Military Museum, with dive details, site depths, difficulty levels and tips for photographers and training.

What Are Artificial Reefs in Aqaba?

Artificial reefs are structures placed underwater to promote marine growth and create new habitats. In Aqaba, local authorities and conservation groups have intentionally sunk tanks, helicopters, aircraft, armored vehicles and purpose-built structures. Once underwater these quickly become home to soft corals, sponges, lionfish, moray eels, juvenile fish schools and even green turtles.

1. The Famous Tank Dive in Aqaba

Depth: 6–8 meters
Difficulty: Easy – perfect for beginners
Best for: Discover Scuba Diving, Open Water training, underwater photography

The M42 Duster Tank is one of Aqaba’s signature dive sites. Sunk close to shore and resting upright on a sandy bottom, it provides an unforgettable experience for both new and experienced divers. Bright soft corals and small anthias often surround the tank’s turret, and because the site is shallow it’s ideal for wide-angle and GoPro shots.

2. The Underwater Military Museum

Depth: 15–28 meters
Difficulty: Open Water / Advanced depending on the target
Best for: Wreck lovers, adventure divers

Aqaba’s Underwater Military Museum includes more than 21 pieces of decommissioned military equipment placed strategically across the seabed, such as armored personnel carriers, tanks, ambulances and small artillery. These structures form one of the most peculiar and fascinating dive zones in the Red Sea.

3. The Tristar Airplane Wreck

Depth: 15–28 meters
Difficulty: Open Water / Advanced
Best for: Wide-angle photography, iconic wreck exploration

The Lockheed L-1011 Tristar is one of Aqaba’s most spectacular artificial reefs. Sunk in 2019, it sits largely intact on the sand with the nose shallower and the tail deeper. Its size and intact fuselage make it perfect for dramatic wide-angle photos and long, exploratory dives.

4. The C-130 Hercules Aircraft Wreck

Depth: 12–16 meters
Difficulty: Open Water
Best for: New wreck divers, underwater photography, training dives

The C-130 Hercules (sunk in 2017) is another iconic site near the Sevem Sisters reef. Its open cargo bay and accessible cockpit make it a favorite for both photography and training exercises such as Navigation and Wreck Diver courses.

Why Aqaba Creates Artificial Reefs

  • Marine Conservation — artificial structures reduce pressure on natural reefs and help regeneration.
  • Habitat Creation — wrecks create homes for fish, corals and macro life.
  • Diving Tourism — unique attractions boost Aqaba’s international dive profile.
  • Training Opportunities — calm, shallow wrecks are ideal for courses and specialties.

Who Can Dive Aqaba’s Artificial Reefs?

These sites welcome divers of all levels. Non-divers can try Discover Scuba at the Tank; Open Water divers can explore Hercules C-130 and parts of the Tristar; Advanced divers will enjoy the deeper sections of the Military Museum and Tristar tail.
